CHANGING OF THE GUARD

Both State and National Leadership Changes

Both the New Jersey State Federation of Teachers (NJSFT) and national American Federation of Teachers (AFT) elected new presidents, and in doing so, broke new ground.

Bill Lipkin was elected president of the NJSFT at the state convention in April. For the past six years, Bill was involved in the organizing of the Union CC Adjunct Faculty Federation and then served as its president.

He is the first representative from the community colleges to head the state organization whose members are both from K-12 schools and from New Jersey’s community colleges.

“Delegates to the 2008 AFT convention elected a new slate of national officers on July 14 in Chicago, voting to install Randi Weingarten as AFT president, Antonia Cortese as secretary-treasurer and Lorretta Johnson as executive vice president.” This is the first time that women have held the major offices in any United States national union. “Weingarten is known as a reform-minded leader who has demonstrated her commitment to improving schools, hospitals and public institutions for children, families and their communities.

She represents the next generation of labor leader, committed to making our public institutions the best they can be, eager to organize new sectors of the workforce, and always seeking to win for workers both economic security and a stronger voice in decisions that affect their jobs and the people they serve.” More information and Weingarten’s first address to the AFT can be found on the AFT website: www.aft.org
