AFT News You Can Use

For AFT retirees and others receiving Medicare,  there is online assistance available in figuring out which Medicare Part D plan you should choose. Log on to the “Medicare Interactive Counselor” website at http://www.unionvoice.org/ct/upadVP91cjLJ/ to learn more about the costs and coverage under Medicare Part D, or to find out how to qualify for extra help or a Medicare savings program which will help pay for Medicare-related costs.  It has been made available to members by the AFT and the AFT-affiliated New York State United Teachers.

Because Medicare private drug plan (Part D) costs change every year, now is the time to review Medicare drug coverage options for 2010.  Knowing the new rates can help Medicare recipients avoid surprise charges.

Medicare Interactive is a resource provided by the Medicare Rights Center, the largest independent source of health care information and assistance in the United States for people with Medicare.

Adjunct Pinkett Awarded

Fulbright

Louis Pinkett, a longtime CCC adjunct, was awarded a Fulbright grant for teaching and research in Russia. This was one of three Fulbright grants awarded to community college professors this year.

Pinkett, an English/ESL composition instructor, is teaching a course this semester on using American film to teach writing. Previously, Pinkett spent a year as a State Department sponsored English Language Fellow in Belarus.

According to an interview in the Chronicle of American Education, Pinkett, encourages other adjuncts to apply for Fulbright fellowships and says “In this sometimes difficult world, friends are important. Russia and the U.S. have many common needs, which are sometimes forgotten in government-level relations and the politicking involved.”
