Text Box: Negotiations News
The Camden County College Chapter of United Adjuncts is planning to enter negotiations with the College this fall. Our present contract expires December 31, 2009. Since the last time when we had formal negotiations with the College, the College and the County have joined in providing services. The Transformation Initiative, as this joining of services is called, means that a lawyer from the County will be sitting at the bargaining table.
We are extremely fortunate in that AFT has loaned us one of their best professional negotiations specialists to sit at the table with us. This should help to even the playing field. Check the website http://www.ccc-aft.org for negotiations updates as they occur.

Joining the Union

Although adjuncts are welcome to join the Camden County College Adjunct Faculty Federation at any time, representational dues are deducted at the beginning of the adjunct’s second consecutive semester. For information on  joining the CCCAFF, contact Membership Co-Chair Karen Feldman at kfeldman@camdencc.edu. You must join the union to be able to participate in voting decisions and to be able to take advantage of AFT programs.

Upholding the Contract

·          We have been assured, that despite the economic situation, our negotiated salary increases will be in our fall paychecks. Stipends will go from $630 to $650/per credit hour.

·           A 30-semester adjunct grieved the loss of a summer class in the week preceding the start of classes, and was awarded payment for the course as stipulated in our contract. (Classes can be taken away only for lack of enrollment or for a full-time professor to make load. Neither was the case in this situation.) Article IV; Section A.

·          The union acted in behalf of the writing adjuncts who were told at the beginning of the semester that they would have to report for work on two Saturdays, beyond normal class time. Arrangements have been made to pay the adjuncts for their extra time at the regular rate.

H1N1 UPDATE

¨         At the Adjunct Faculty Orientation, Vice-President Hamilton asked the adjuncts to be lenient in enforcing their attendance policies in light of the expected high absenteeism from H1N1.

¨         If you get sick with the H1N1 flu virus, be sure to mention that fact when you fill out your absentee report.

¨         Be sure your students have access to your assignments so they can continue with their work if you are out. [Tom Murray tmurray@camdencc.edu will do training for on-line instruction. It’s FREE and it adds to your marketability.]

¨         The College is working closely with the County Health department regarding the distribution of vaccines.

¨         Seasonal Flu vaccines will not be available at the College and it is suggested that you go to your family doctor for your annual flu shot.

¨         CCC has applied to distribute vaccines to students and faculty. They have not yet been confirmed as a distribution center but will notify everyone as soon as they are.

¨         The CCC website contains updates on H1N1.

¨         There is quite a bit of information on the AFT website at http://www.aft.org. Specific information on H1N1 is also available for Higher Ed members at http://www.aft.org/topics/h1n1/highered.htm.  A fact sheet is also available at http://www.aft.org/topics/h1n1/downloads/FactSheet_Highered.pdf
